This needs to be reviewed, too. Is this still state-of-the-art?
The configuration described here allows you to
- login as the user stored in the LDAP database of our server (no local user required)
- use a local home directory on your MAC HDD instead of your home directory on the server. This makes sense for efficiency reasons, but note that you do not have any automated backup for this local directory. So mounting your server home directory and storing important data there is recomended. If you do not want to use a local home directory but the server home directory instead, skip the part "Modifications on the server" and the last four points in the part "Modifications on the client"
We denote the name of the user and its login name with YOUR_USER and USERRNAME respectively. E.g. YOUR_USER=Kalle Blomquist and USERNAME=kalleb
Modifications on the server
Add via phpLDAPadmin in the LDAP database to People->YOUR_USER to the attribute "objectClass" the value "appleUser". Give the required field "appleHomeDirectory" the value "/Users/USERNAME".
Modifications on the client
choose Dienstprogramme->Verzeichnisdienste->LDAPv3->konfigurieren
- create a new server with name "ldap.ps.uni-saarland.de" (with options for ssl, use for identification and use for contacts selected)
- select the server ldap.ps.uni-saarland.de and "bearbeiten"
select tab "Suche & Pfade"
select in the box "Datensatztypen und Attribute" Users->NFSHomeDirectory
- add a new entry "appleHomeDirectory" above "home Directory" in the box "Umleiten auf Objekte in der Liste"
Mounting your server home directory
Finder->gehe zu->mit Server verbinden
- connect to server james.ps.uni-saarland.de
- select the volume "Home Directory" (The mounted Home Directory should now occur on your desktop)
in order to always mount the home directory automatically during login, select "Systemeinstellungen->Benutzer->Startobjekte" and drag&drop the mounted Home Directory from the desktop to the list of objects that are opened during login.
