SSH Tunneling

This Page describes describes how to use an SSH tunnel through james in order to access publications.

  1. Use SSH to set up a SOCKS proxy on your local machine (exists as long as creating ssh)

    ssh -D 12345 <user>@james.ps.uni-saarland.de
  2. Configure jour favorite Browser to use the Proxy
    1. Firefox:

      • Go to Settings -> Advanced -> Network -> Connection/Verbindung

      • Set to manual proxy configutation
      • Set the SOCKS Host to "localhost" and the port to 12345 (or whatever was used above)
    2. Mac OS / Safari: Safari has no way to configure a proxy only for the broswer, so you need to configure the proxi settings of Mac OS
      • Go to Safari -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxies

      • Select the SOCKS Protocol
      • Set the SOCKS Host to "localhost" and the port to 12345 (or whatever was used above)
        (Note: This will rout ALL your internet traffic through james. Don't worry, james has more than enough bandwith)
